The Month of Sha'baan A.H.1429

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Assalamu alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu,

The great month of Sha'ban will begin soon, so let us try to learn something about this great month.

Firstly: It is narrated in the collections of Abu Dawood , al-Nasaa'i , Ahmad and Ibn Maajah, that the Prophet used to fast the whole of Sha'baan. Umm Salamah said: “I never saw the Messenger of Allah fast two consecutive months apart from the months of Sha'baan and Ramadaan, in which he fasted consecutively.” We also have another hadeeth, narrated by Abu Dawood: “The Prophet never used to fast any complete month in the year, apart from Sha'baan, which he used to join to Ramadaan.”, also it is narrated that Abu Salamah said: “I asked ‘Aa'ishah about the fasting of the Messenger of Allah , and she said: ‘He used to fast until we thought that he would always fast, then he would not fast until we thought that he would never fast, but I never saw him fast in any month more than he fasted in Sha'baan. He used to fast all of Sha'baan, and he used to fast all of Sha'baan apart from a few days.” (Muslim)

Secondly: The scholars of hadeeth differed as to the way of reconciling between the hadeeths mentioned above:

1- Some of them said that this had to do with differences of time. In some years the Prophet fasted all of Sha'baan, and in other years he fasted all of that month apart from a few days.

2- Others said that the Prophet never fasted any month in full apart from Ramadan, and they interpreted the hadeeth of Umm Salamah as meaning that he fasted all of Sha'baan apart from a few days. They said that this is possible from a linguistic point of view, that if a man fasts for most of a month it may be said that he fasted the whole month.

Thirdly: The reason why the Prophet fasted all of Sha'baan apart from a few days is because our deeds are shown to Allah daily, weekly, and yearly:

1- Daily after fajer and after Aser prayers as narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah said : “ upon you there are angels who gather at morning prayer ( Fajr ) and after noon prayer ( Asr ), then they go to Allah who will ask them: "What was the condition of my slaves when you left them?" They will reply: "When we left them they were praying as they were when we came to them.” (Bukhari & Muslim)

2- Weekly on Mondays and Thursdays as narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah said: “Deeds are presented to Allah on Mondays and Thursdays, and I like my deeds to be presented when I am fasting.” (al-Tirmidhi)

3- Yearly on Sha'baan as narrated from Osama ibn Zayed ( may Allaah be pleased with them) said : “ I said, 'O messenger of Allah, I never see you fast any month more than you fast on Sha'baan.' He said: “ This month (Sha'baan ) comes between Rajab and Ramadan. So many people neglected it while their deeds are presented (to Allah) in this month, and I like my deeds to be presented when I am fasting.” (al-Nasaa'i)

Based on this, It is recommended to fast as much as we can in Sha'baan , because the Prophet used to fast a great deal in the month of Sha'baan. May Allah help all of us to be as He likes, and guide us to the right way. Ameen

The Nisfu Sha'baan A.H.1429

This year the 15th or Nisfu Shaban falls on the 17th August. Imran b. Husain reported Allah's Messenger having said to him or to someone else: Did you fast in the middle of Sha'baan? He said: No. Thereupon the Holy Prophet said: If you did not observe fast, then you should observe fast for two days. (Sahih Muslim)

Ramadan is approaching!

To know exactly the beginning of our blessed month of Ramadan 1428 A.H., please check this website on Monday, September 1st, 2008 after 10:00 p.m. The first taroweeh prayers will be on the following evening, after the isha prayer.

Narrated Abdullah bin Umar : Allah's Apostle mentioned Ramadan and said, "Do not fast unless you see the crescent (of Ramadan), and do not give up fasting till you see the crescent (of Shawwal), but if the sky is overcast (if you cannot see it), then act on estimation (i.e. count Sha'baan as 30 days)." (Sahih Bukhari)
