Sightseeing at Kobe Mosque
Description of the buildings
Kobe Mosque is located on the hillside in the historical foreigners' quarter of Kobe. Its unique architecture and serene atmosphere make it popular among sightseers visiting this international city.
Kobe Mosque is built to a traditional Turkish design. The first floor is for men and the second floor for women. The third floor and the basement are used to accommodate large congregations during the traditional Islamic festivals. The building has a traditional domed roof and there are two towers or minarets, from which the call to prayer is traditionally made.
The Cultural Center is a modern structure adjoining the mosque. It contains the reception, the administrative office, the library, classrooms and apartments.
Rules for Visiting the Mosque
You are welcome to visit the mosque for sightseeing. Visitors are reminded that this is the House of God and requested to treat it with due courtesy and respect. The first floor is for men and the second floor is for women. Please lower your voices and control your children. Visitors are requested not to enter the mosque for sightseeing when one of the five daily prayers is being performed unless they have obtained permission from someone in authority and are appropriately dressed for prayer. At other times visitors may enter as long as they are wearing modest clothes. (See section on dress code below)
Lectures to Non-Muslims
Non-Muslims who would like to receive a lecture on Islamic topics during their visit should make an appointment with the mosque in advance.
Dress code for visitors
Visitors are requested to wear modest dress. Men and women should wear clothing which covers their legs. In addition women should cover their arms and bring a scarf to cover their hair.
Cameras and Videos
Pictures of the interior of the mosque are permitted. Please do not take photographs of worshippers unless you have first obtained their permission.
