Striving to Gain the Treasures of Ramadan

A series of lectures by Imam Mohsen

The Purpose of Ramadan

How to get the Benefits of Ramadan

Laylat al Qadr

Messages from Imam Mohsen:

1. Dear Brothers and Sisters, Assalamu alikumu Warahmatu Allahi Wabarakatoh!

Allah Ta'ala has put in this holy month of Ramadan many blessings, so try your best to get as much as you can from it. Ramadan is a chance to rebuild your relations with Allah and with all of His creation, the relations which are based on the purification of your heart which you will get during this month through struggling against your desires.

Ramadan can lead to the reward of Hajj. Every Muslim is looking forward to visiting Mecca and performing Hajj, which is obligatory for those who can perform it. Hajj results in the forgiveness of all our previous sins, and we will return from Hajj with a new, clear and clean book or records. What a wonderful gift Allah has given us in this month of Ramadan! If we can fast with sincere faith and hoping for the reward from Allah then we will get the reward of performing Hajj; (All our previous sins will be forgiven).

A second chance for you to get the same reward of forgiveness for all of your previous sins is by performing Night prayers during all the nights of Ramadhan.

A third chance that Allah gives us to get full forgiveness for all our previous sins is to observe worshipping of Allah by performing night prayers during the Night of Decree (Laylat ul-Qadr).

This can be easily extracted from the Hadith: Narrated Abu Huraira (RAA): I heard Allah's Apostle (SAW) saying regarding Ramadan, "Whoever prayed at night in it the month of Ramadan out of sincere Faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven." (Bukhari)

Imam Mohsen

2. Ramadan 17th. Dear Brothers and Sisters, Assalamu alikumu Warahmatu Allahi Wabarakatoh!

The holy month of Ramadan is passing very fast. Can you imagine that this Friday is 17th Ramadan? Have you already received the blessings of Allah and His forgiveness? If you answer is 'Yes', then you should thank Him by offering even more prayers, and if it is not, then you must increase your prayers to Him, and ask Him to forgive you, and help you to get this great reward in the coming days.

By the way, I would like to remind myself and all of you about a great occasion that occurred on 17th Ramadan; it is the Battle of Badr. Really it was a great battle at which a few Muslims with the leadership of our Prophet SAAW defeated a large number of heavily armed Mushrekeen. The main reason for this great victory was the strong faith in their hearts,

We should all remember that our Lord promises us that: "If we are a true believers and only fear Him, then He will make everything afraid of us, while if we fear anything other than Him, or associate partners with Him, He will leave us in fear from anything".

During that Battle the Believers feared only Allah ta 'ala, and so He sent His angels to fight alongside them to defeat the idol worshippers. Let us fear only Allah, because this is reason for the victory at any time. May Allah help all of us and guide us to the Right Way, and help us to draw nearer and nearer to Him, Allahuma Ameen.

Imam Mohsen.

Laylat ul-Qadr

According to well known hadith, Laylat al Qadr may fall on any of the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan. On the 27th night, the night of Monday, October 8th, there will be prayers at the mosque throughout the night.

Itikaf

During the last ten days, known as 'Freedom from the Fire', it was the Holy Prophet's custom to perform itikaf, that is to stay in the mosque with the intention of worshipping Allah and not to leave it for any reason. Anyone who wishes to perform itikaf should contact the Mosque to make arrangements.

Zakat al-Fitr

Your Zakat al-Fitr should be paid before the Eid prayer. The Islamic Center in Tokyo has set the amount at 1,500 yen for each person in your household. It can be given to the Imam or placed in the box provided.

Eid Al-Fitr

Please check the home page to confirm the exact date. The prayer is at 9:00 a.m. As we expect many brothers and sisters to come, let us show our neighbors the good manners of Islam by not crowding the sidewalks. If you come by road, you are requested to leave your car in one of the nearby parking lots, and not to park in the street outside the mosque. Thank you.

A Message About the Adab of Eid

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Assalamu Alikumu Wa Rahmatu Allahi Wabarakatuhu

We will celebrate Eid al-Fitr, inShaa'Allah, so let us know something about what we should do on the day of Eid :

The Sunnahs that we should observe on the day of Eid are as follows:

1. Doing ghusl before going out to the prayer.

Abd-Allah ibn eUmar used to do ghusl on the day of al-Fitr before going out to the prayer-place in the morning. (Al-Muwatta) The reason why it is mustahabb is the same reason as for doing ghusl before Jumu'ah and other public gatherings.

2. Eating before going out to pray on Eid al-Fitr and after the prayer on Eid al-Adha:

Part of the etiquette is not to go out to pray on Eid al-Fitr until one has eaten some dates, because of the hadeeth narrated by Anas ibn Maalik , who said that the Messenger of Allah used not to go out on the morning of Eid al-Fitr until he had eaten some datesc of which he would eat an odd number. (Al-Bukhaari) It is mustahabb to eat before going out to emphasize the fact that it is forbidden to fast on that day and to demonstrate that the fast has ended.

Whoever does not have any dates may break his fast with anything that is permissible. But on Eid al-Adha it is mustahabb not to eat anything until one comes back from the prayer, so he should eat from the udhiyah if he has offered a sacrifice. If he is not going to offer a sacrifice there is nothing wrong with eating before the prayer.

3. Takbeer on the day of Eid

This is one of the greatest Sunnahs on the day of Eid because Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):g(He wants that you) must complete the same number (of days), and that you must magnify Allaah [i.e. to say Takbeer (Allaahu Akbar: Allaah is the Most Great)] for having guided you so that you may be grateful to Himh[al-Baqarah 2:185]

It was narrated that al-Waleed ibn Muslim said: I asked al-Awzaa'i and Maalik ibn Anas about saying Takbeer out loud on the two Eids. They said, Yes, eAbd-Allah ibn eUmar used to say it out loud on the day of al-Fitr until the imam came out (to lead the prayers).

It was narrated in a saheeh report that eAbd al-Rahmaan al-Sulami said, gThey emphasized it more on the day of al-Fitr than the day of al-Adha.h. Wakee' said, this refers to the takbeer. (See Irwa' al-Ghaleel , 3/122/)

Al-Daaraqutni and others narrated that on the morning of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, Ibn eUmar would strive hard in reciting takbeer until he came to the prayer place, then he would recite takbeer until the imam came out.

Ibn Abi Shaybah narrated with a saheeh isnaad that al-Zuhri said: The people used to recite Takbeer on Eid when they came out of their houses until they came to the prayer place, and until the imam came out. When the imam came out they fell silent, and when he said takbeer they said takbeer. (See Irwa' al-Ghaleel , 1/121)

Saying takbeer when coming out of one's house to the prayer place and until the imam came out was something that was well known among the salaf (early generations). This has been narrated by a number of scholars such as Ibn Abi Shaybah, eAbd a l-Razzaaq and al-Firyaabi in Ahkaam al-Eidayn from a group of the salaf. For example, Naafi' ibn Jubayr used to recite takbeer and was astonished that the people did not do so, and he said, gWhy do you not recite takbeer?h

Ibn Shihaab al-Zuhri (may Allaah have mercy on him) used to say, gThe people used to recite takbeer from the time they came out of their houses until the imam came in.h

The time for takbeer on Eid al-Fitr starts from the night before Eid until the imam enters to lead the Eid prayer.

In the case of Eid al-Adha, the takbeer begins on the first day of Dhu'l-Hijjah and lasts until sunset on the last of the days of tashreeq.

4. Offering congratulations

The etiquette of Eid also includes the congratulations and good wishes exchanged by people, no matter what the wording, such as saying to one another Taqabbala Allaah minna wa minkum (May Allaah accept (good deeds) from us and from youh or g Eid mubaarak h and other permissible expressions of congratulations.

It was narrated that Jubayr ibn Nufayr said: When the companions of the Prophet met one another on the day of Eid, they would say to one another, gMay Allah accept (good deeds) from us and from you.h.

5. Adorning oneself on the occasion of Eid.

It was narrated that eAbd-Allah ibn eUmar said that eUmar took a brocade cloak that was for sale in the market and brought it to the Messenger of Allah , and said, gO Messenger of Allah, buy this and adorn yourself with it for Eid and for receiving the delegations.h The Messenger of Allah said to him, gRather this is the dress of one who has no share (of piety or of reward in the Hereafter)ch (Narrated by al-Bukhari, 948.)

6. Going to the prayer by one route and returning by another.

It was narrated that Jaabir ibn eAbd-Allah said: "On the day of Eid, the Prophet used to vary his route. (Narrated by al-Bukhaari.)

It was said that the reason for that was so that the two routes would testify for him on the Day of Resurrection, for the earth will speak on the Day of Resurrection and say what was done on it, both good and bad.

May Allah help all of us to be as He likes, and guide us to the right way, Ameen.

Imam, Mohsen.

Important Notice about Parking

The mosque is crowded at the time of the Eid prayers. It would be better not to come by car. Please do not park in the street in front of the mosque as this will cause inconvenience to the neighbors, attract the attention of the police and give a bad impression to those whom it is our duty to invite to Islam by our good example and good manners.

Visiting the Graveyard

It is our custom after every Eid Prayer to visit the Foreigners' cemetary on Mt. Rokko, about 15 minutes drive from the mosque. There we recite Surah Ya Sin and pray for our brothers and sisters who have passed away.

Preserving the blessings of this holy month

We hope that will be able to sustain the worship which they established during the blessed month of Ramadan. The sign that Allah ta 'ala has accepted your Ramadan is that you continue to perform the good actions that you have established in this holy month. From a lecture given on the Friday after Ramadan by Imam Mohsen. For the complete lecture, read

Bidding Farewell to Ramadan

Fasting Six Day of Shawal

If you fast six days in the month of Shawal after completing Ramadan, it as if you fasted for the entire year.
